Cosplay Tutorial : #1 The Elastic Sock Stripes

I decided to make a tutorial for this because I couldn't find a good way to put lines on my cosplay socks. I am working on a cosplay for Natsuo Maki from the anime Love Lab. I figured I would also share this tutorial because a lot of anime characters have striped socks.

Before trying this method of sock stripes I tried painting on the stripes with fabric paint. I went all out by putting on the socks and putting plastic wrap around my legs were the socks stopped and also using tape to make clean lines. I thought it would work( I used this tape method on my shirt and it worked great! ) but after 2 hours of drying the lines bled and I as really frustrated. I decided maybe I would sew ribbon onto the socks but the ribbon would not be stretchy enough and I didn't want something I could possibly mess up! I decided I could use elastic and sew it to the sock but I figured that would end up badly. I also couldn't find a tutorial that would help. Then I came up with the idea of making "stripe garters " with the elastic. It would be easy to take off and on and it would hold on to my socks well and wouldn't fall down.

Now on to the tutorial!

What you will need

  • Elastic (in the color you need for your character
  • a pair of scissors
  • thread
  • sewing machine
  • Pins are optional (if you want to pin your measured elastic to the elastic you want to cut)

Step #1

  • cut a strip of elastic or you can use a stretchy piece of rope to measure your leg where the stripes will rest.
  • make sure the elastic or rope is slightly stretched so it will fit around your leg (don't measure unstreached because then it will be too large) Also leave a little room for seam allowance!

Step #2

  • after measuring  make a test stripe.
  • this is when you can cut the elastic  to the desired thickness you need.
  • Fold the two ends of your test stripe together
  •   This is when you will need your sewing machine.

Step #3

  • take your stripe and sew along the end( this is where the room you made for seam allowance comes it!)

  • I used the number 8 stitch on my machine
  • I secured the stitch by going over it more than once.
  • Your test stripe should come up looking like image 3

    Step #4

    • Turn the elastic inside out ( meaning make sure your seam is on the inside of the loop.
    • And there you have your test stripe!

    before I turned it inside-out

     Step #5

    • Now that you have your test stripe you can use it to measure out the other stripes you need!
    • just cut other strips of elastic and fold them in the same way you folded your test stripe before sewing and cut it to be equal to your test stripe.
    • Now just sew the loop shut and you have another stripe
    Cut a strip
cutting down to get same thickness

    after cutting what I need

Then when your done just slip on the elastic bands and YAY! you have stripes! they will not move around if you made them tight enough and there is no damage to socks or any messy clean up!

I hope this was a clear tutorial to follow and I hope it helped!

Bodyline Seifuku Review (COSTUME410)

I decided to make my first Bodyline purchase after receiving my Spreepicky Seifuku, which is okay but I don't feel comfortable wearing the skirt out ( just a bit too short for me) :( . I have been watching Bodyline's shop for years and always worried about ordering from them. But it was very simple! I watched allison1derlnd's  review of her bodyline seifuku and knew I had to get one! kaikoshuminokokoro's review was also very helpful! I purchased costume 410.

I purchased the seifuku on April 9th and it arrived on May 5th. It arrived in a grey mail bag and was packed in plastic. It came on a hanger and was clean and nice. the only thing is it is a bit wrinkled and needs to be ironed but that's okay.

two clips to attach triangle piece
The fabric is very nice! the skirt is not see-through like Spreepicky's and the top has a zipper in the front which is a great feature. The color is true to the picture provided on the website. The tie is really nice. It's well constructed and has an adjustable strap.

I ordered a size 5L because I wanted to make sure the skirt would fit me properly. I have a big butt and I wanted to make sure my butt wouldn't hang out of it( for reference my hips are 40 inches). I knew the top would be a little large on me but I figured I could always take it in. I was stuck between picking the 4L, 5L, or 6L but the 4L was out of stock in the purple. I think I would buy others in a size 4L or a 5L in the future. I am a large in American sizes.

Clasp and zipper on skirt.

The skirt features elastic ruching on both sides (when I put it on I didn't stretch the ruching)

the skirt comes with the pleats sewn down so it would not mess up

The stitches are very easy to remove and it will not damage the skirt if you take your time.
You will need a seam ripper

Place the seam ripper between the stitch and the skirt fabric and pull upwards to cut

the pleat is now released!

When looking at other reviews of this seifuku people have said the top is short and when you lift your arms it shows your stomach. I didn't really have this problem. My skirt is on my waist and the top is big enough to fall over the skirt nicely. When I raise my arms the top does go up a bit but not enough to expose  a lot of skin. I plan to wear a cami under the top anyway and shorts under my skirt. I think I don't have a big problem with the top length because my torso is short.

not too much shows.

Review Overview:

This seifuku is great for normal wear and for cosplay. It is best to check your size and go a size up just to be safe ( it's easier to take in an outfit). The quality is great. I have read a few horror stories about Bodyline but it went great for me and I would definitely buy from them again! The skirt and top are made of good fabric and NOT see-through. The color is also beautiful! The costume is sturdy and well made! I would recommend buying this!

Shipping: 5/5 (Got here faster than expected)
Quality:  5/5
  Design: 5/5
Fit: 4.5/5 (top is a little big on me but it's okay)

I hope this review Helped!

Japanese School Bag Review

Just like a seifuku I have wanted a Japanese school bag for a long time. Im currently working on my Natsuo Maki cosplay for AnimeNext this year . It was the perfect opportunity to convince myself to buy the school bag! I originally wanted to buy the bag from Jlist/jbox but when I went to buy it the one I wanted (the cheaper one) was no longer available. (it is available now and the links for the bag I purchased and others I have found will be linked below).

I decided to purchase my Japanese school bag from Amazon. I placed my order on April 6th and my bag arrived May 7th.  I was provided with a tracking number. I can already say that I love this bag the only problem I have is how long it took to arrive. My bag sat in china ready to ship for over 28 days! I am really upset about that. I ordered a package from Japan(which I will do a review on later) that came in less time than this bag!

Besides the shipping, the quality of the bag itself is great! I was so pleased with how true to the picture it was! It arrived in a grey post bag and it was sealed in a plastic bag. The bag was brand new , no marks or dirt!

The front of the bag has two pockets. The smaller pocket has a decent amount of space, it is a great spot for a phone or small camera. the larger pocket has a zipper on the top and has a lot of space! it has mini pockets for pens and pencils.
